now on today in iowa... strong storms move through eastern iowa -- we're tracking down damage. plus...a lack of communication. an iowa city working to make sure firefighters are in the and traveling to cuba -- interest could spike after fidel castro's death -- but there are still restrictions in place. good morning, i'm ally crutcher and i'm jerry gallagher. unseasonably warm throughout the month -- we see tornados in iowa -- in november. funnel clouds and tornadoes. parkersburg -- which saw an ef-5 tornado back in 2008 -- held its breath as a funnel cloud passed through town. this time -- a shed blown off roof damage. in radcliffe -- that's in hardin county -- people say they heard gusty winds and loud booms.

digging deeper this morning... after growing concern... some answers. one eastern iowa fire station is working to improve communication between firfighters and city leaders. the president of the cedar falls firefighters association some firefighters have been frustrated. they feel that important decisions are being made that affect them.... but no one is talking to them about schilling left.... firefighters didn't know finalists for a new fire chief were chosen until the media released information. they also didn't know about a possible new location for their "we have to figure out a way to the department head, we can have them pointing fingers at each other. somebody has to say i made this decision, and it was

mayor brown are working together to make a change. they met last week... both agreeing that it was a very postitive... constructive meeting.. they believe communication will improve between the firefighters and the city... it just may take some time. a developing story this morning - a plane carrying a soccer team from brazil has crashed. 81 people were on the flight that went down in colombia. five peoplrv the team was on its way to a regional tournament. no word yet on what went wrong, but colombia had been hit hard by heavy rain and thunderstorms. continuing coverage -- it's up to a judge to decide whether a former substitute teacher is guilty. mary beth haglin is charged with sexual exploitation by a school employee. she was a substitute teacher at cedar rapids washington high school. she waived her right to a trial by jury and instead a judge will review the case, looking over interviews investigators did to

felony charge was filed. but those interviews are not being included in the case, so the judge will only decide on an aggravated misdemeanor charge which carries a maximum of two years in prison. farmers work hard to save their 250 cows when a dairy barn catches fire. the birker family farm in benton county catching fire over the weekend. owners plan to rebuild... matter of-wegot big machinery here, and they're moving right along, so it'll look totally different tomorrow already. firefighters have ruled out arson- and are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire. they believe it might be electrical-related. accepting housing vouchers -- it seems the idea of making the concept

council discussed housing vouchers -- often called section eight vouchers. one idea floated in the city was making it mandatory for landlords to accept them -- adding it to the city's non- discrimination ordinance. some "main reasons we're concerned about our property rights as housing providers. we feel we should have the right to choose who we want to, based on our criteria not the city's or somebody elses criteria." vote last night according to our coverage partners at the telegraph herald -- the council may move forward with providing incentives to encourage people to participate -- instead of making it mandatory. a kwwl follow-up. classes are set to continue today at ohio state university -- one day after a man allegedly attacked his fellow students. a prayer vigil held on campus

got out and started stabbing people with a butcher knife. eleven people got hurt, one critically. a campus officer shot the suspect. a woman is stabbed to death inside a hospital. it happened in virginia. the woman worked at the hospital and her sister says the suspect was the woman's ex- a new plan for fighting gun violence. an illinois congressman announcing his plan -- after his grandson is killed in a ho factor and his plan involves dedicating resources to chciago neighborhoods where poverty has been an ongoing problem for 30 years or more. "this plan is cost effective. it will not raise taxes. it will possibility." he's stressing the need for bipartisan support to address the issue. a passenger on a plane pulls

jumps out. it happened right as the plane landed in houston. in airport surveillance video, she can be seen running across the tarmac toward the terminal. video from inside the plane shows the aftermath, and the missing door in the emergency row. it's still unclear why the woman jumped out of the plane. she's since been taken into custody. delta airlines bans a passenger for life -- after he was caught on video insulting fellow passengers who voted for hillary clinton. capture the events that led up to the incident. delta's c-e-o apologized monday... and offered refunds to customers on board. stuck in the snow for more than a day/ rescue crews found a california couple who went for a drive in rural mountains over the weekend. family members say they were last heard from on sunday afternoon when they sent a text that they were stuck in the snow. " you sort of have two different cubas. you have the exiled community in places like miami, tampa, and other places that but in cuba you do have this next generation that all they've ever known is communism and castro." streit hopes to see basic rights such freedom of speech given to his family still living in cuba. the first commercial flight from the united states to havana in more than 50 years lands in cuba. cubans saluted the packed american airlines flight by spraying water from fire trucks above the plane as it taxied along the runway. no music -- as the country currently bans music as it mourns castro's death. some flights to cuba began earlier this year -- but this was the first flight to the capital city. castro's death is likely to

according to the group fight for 16 uber drivers around the country are expected to strike today to push for a 15-dollar minimum wage. uber has said in the past drivers in its top 20 u-s markets actually average more than 19-dollars an hour. but drivers complain of aggressive fare cuts and no accounting for expenses like gas, repairs and insurance.

on highway 20. according to the black hawk county sheriff's office -- someone hit the officer's squad car. you can see in this video a number of officers responding. according to the waterloo fire chief -- no one got hurt, a big story this morning: two days from december and we're talking about tornadoes. severe weather rolled through eastern iowa yesterday. this video was sent to us from a viewer near parkersburg, with a funnel forming above butler c management says -- fortunately -- the county escaped with very little damage. some roof damage, a small shed blown off its foundation and some tree limbs down. more video -- this out of grundy center. it shows a slim funnel cloud. there were at six reports of tornadoes yesterday in iowa. it's unusual for this time of year... but certainly has happened before. 41 tornadoes in iowa during the month november since 1980. the storms also brought hail -- here are a few pictures of the

cause. the oil recycling business burned for several hours thursday before it was able to be controlled -- even injuring a fire fighter. he was treated and released from the hospital. seatbelts save lives. over the weekend -- cedar rapids police officers responded to crash on i-380. their s-u-v got hit when another driver lost control. the people in that car died. the officers had to be taken to the hospital. they've since been released. pictures of their wrecked s-u-v on facebook-- saying they quote "have two police officers alive today because they had their seatbelts on" they're encouraging others to take the time to buckle up every time you're in a car. a quick thinking police detective is credited with saving a man from a burning car. police in enw jersey say a driver suffered a medical problem, crashed into another car -- and both burst into flames.

"it was something he didn't just a few weeks, and the city plans to honor him with a lifesaving award. students go back to class this morning at ohio state after emergency? le right outside of watts hall and there is a guy who crashed his car into a bunch of people and ran out with a knife chasing down people." 11 were hurt -- including one person who has critical injuries. the attacker -- an ohio state student -- posted a rant before he plowed his car into a crowd. he wrote on what appears to be his facebook page -- that he reached a boiling point -- and made a reference to a lone wolf attack. investigators are searching his apartment. f-b-i agents have been seen

the killer was a somali refugee who lived in pakistan before coming to the u-s as a legal permanent resident two years ago. the university's student newspaper ran an interview with a student of the same name in august -- he identified himself as muslim. leaders of muslim mosques and organizations in ohio condemning the attack. a campus police officer shot and killed the suspect. police say one of their officers was on the scene within a minute yesterday and killed the attacker -- likely saving lives. university will be stronger -- having learned a lot from what happened. "and i can promise you, from game beyond what is really just an unbelievable, amazing, outstanding and heroic performance on the part of our first responders." he says it's not just the students who go there now who are dealing with this.

heading to court today -- the bus driver accused in that deadly crash last week in tennessee. johnthony walker faces several charges. six students were killed and five others are still in the hospital. investigators say they found no drugs or alcohol in his system -- and at this point -- it's still unclear when the bus crashed. today, jury selection picks up in south carolina in the case against dylann roof. he's accused of killing nine le the judge says roof is competent to stand trial. a judge also says roof can represent himself in court -- as his own attorney. a man wanted by police dies after being shot by an off-duty officer. police say the officer was shopping in a store in illinois the officer later shot him but the suspect was still able to get into a car and drive away. he crashed about a mile down the street -- and then died. we don't know why the man was wanted by police.

from a popular tourist spot. there are at least 14 fires burning around gatlinburg, tennessee. several roads and trails through great smoky mountain national park have been closed. wind gusts keep bringing down trees -- which is helping the fires to spread rapidly. evacuation orders in place in colorado after a wilfire breaks out there -- the flames seen 12 miles away in denver. the cause is not known. some good news for the area expected to get three to five inches of rain -- which will help crews contain the flames -- however -- there's a slight concern the rain could cause landslides. this week, a memorial will open for 19 firefighters who lost their lives fighting a wildfire in arizona. the yarnell hill fire three years ago -- was the deadliest for firefighters in 80 years. thousands gather to say goodbye to a police officer killed on the job.

"he was as imperfectly perfect as you could be. he was intelligent and gracious and loving. and he had a strict side and he was strong and he showed us right from wrong. investigators say the man who shot and the detective was upset over a custody issue and picked the new this morning -- preventing drug overdoses may get easier in iowa. governor branstad says pharmacists can give an overdose reversal drug to people at risk. before -- a prescription was needed from a doctor or a health care professional. the effort is in response to what lieutenant governor kim reynolds calls an "opioid epidemic." nearly 30 other states have also expanded access to overdose reversal drugs. birthday party fun turns

announcements tomorrow." those announcements today are expected to include georgia congressman tom price as secretary of health and human services. he's an orthopedic surgeon, and he's been the republicans' point person to rewrite the affordable care act. tennessee senator bob corker is among seven people scheduled to meet with the trump team today. he's emerged as a viable contender for secretary of state, as insiders clash over mitt romney for that job. romney's in new york for a second meeting with the president elect today. wisconsin. "i'm confident that the president-elect is gonna win." it's going to cost three and a half million dollars. green party candidate jill stein - who requested the recount - says they raised the money overnight. "almost 140,000 donors have stood up to say, 'we deserve an election system that we can have confidence in.'" but experts tell nbc recounts in wisconsin, michigan and pennsylvania are unnecessary. "it was very clear that fraud was not
